Grant Morrison

If I had my vote for “Most Influential Comics Writer of the 2000′s” I’d probably cast it for Grant Morrison. And today avclub.com has an interview with Mr. Morrison (who bares a striking resemblance to Lex Luthor) here.

His work on New X-Men for Marvel comics was groundbreaking, with repercussions still being felt in that series today, not to mention that it led nicely into Joss Whedon’s run on Astonishing X-Men.

With the introduction of DC’s “All-Star” line he provided one of the most timeless Superman stories ever told, and was helped out by frequent artistic collaborator Frank Quitely.

And now he’s currently working his magic on Batman. First in the Batman series, introducing Bruce Wayne’s son (and current Robin) Damien Wayne, to Batman & Robin with Dick Grayson taking over the role of the Dark Knight, and now sending Bruce Wayne through time (and to what one assumes will be his return as Batman) in the Batman: The Return of Bruce Wayne miniseries.

Anyways, this is all just scratching the surface of his career… check out the interview and post comments below on your favorite Grant Morrison runs! Here’s a quick excerpt of the interview:

AVC: Last year, All-Star Superman made a lot of people’s lists of the best comics of the decade. Were you surprised by how beloved that series was?

GM: I don’t know if I should lie, but the answer is no. [Laughs.] We put a lot of thought into it, and we worked through what we wanted Superman to be, and I think people responded as I’d imagined to the architecture of it. Because comics fans are quite into that. They like the Apollonian, rather than the Dionysian, and Superman is very Apollonian. And that’s what I felt. I thought it was always going to be popular, because it was very straight-up. The storytelling stuck to the folktales, so it was intended to be universal and iconic, so that even your 5-year-old nephew could read it. It was intended to be that universal story, and I think that’s how it panned out. It became what we hoped it would be, so I can’t say I was totally surprised.
