Super Serial: Alan Moore’s Swamp Thing, Book 6

on September 05, 2011

Super Serial aims to dissect series of pop art — be it a filmography, discography or run of comics — by looking at its individual components.

Thanks to perennial DC Comics villain and asshole Lex Luthor, Swamp Thing has been exiled from his Earth home. After a startling battle with loneliness and insanity in the excellent “My Blue Heaven,” our hero’s thrown himself out into the cosmos, trying desperately to find a way back to the woman he loves, but not before he learns to realign his bioelectrical field, thereby connecting with his home planet again. — more

Super Serial: Alan Moore’s Swamp Thing, Book 5

Super Serial aims to dissect series of pop art — be it a filmography, discography or run of comics — by looking at its individual components.

Last week, our hero helped to settle the age-old dispute between good and evil… not bad for a night’s work. As the fourth volume of Alan Moore’s Swamp Thing closed, we were left with the question — posed by Abel — of what stories would be about without that typical dichotomy in play. Moore gives us an answer as we move into book five of his series, titled “Earth to Earth.” — more

Super Serial: Alan Moore’s Swamp Thing, Book 4

I’ve used this space before to talk about how Alan Moore’s not just a great writer but a great rewriter. He likes to take things that already exist in the world of fiction and twist them to better meet his needs. We saw that back in the first volume when Moore literally rebuilds Swamp Thing’s origin from the ground up, and again in volume three when he adds a touch to the typical vampire horror trope (living underwater) in order to find a new way to make the story shine, so to speak. Volume 4 contains maybe the best example of Moore’s editing proclivity, as he takes the massive (and massively impenetrable) comic book megaseries Crisis on Infinite Earths and turns it into something truly special. — more

Super Serial: Alan Moore’s Swamp Thing, Book 3

on August 14, 2011

Super Serial aims to dissect series of pop art — be it a filmography, discography or run of comics — by looking at its individual components.

Last week in this column I talked about Alan Moore building Swamp Thing‘s supporting cast via Abby Cable, Swamp Thing’s lovely white-haired ladyfriend. While there’s a real case to be made that Abby’s the second most important character in this book, the fellow Alan Moore introduces in Book 3 is almost certainly his greatest invention. Here we meet John Constantine, the mystical, smart-mouthed Englishman who leads Swamp Thing on a tour of America. — more
