New song from Rainer Maria’s Caithlin De Marrais – Birds

I used to listen to the band Rainer Maria way too much just the right amount. I went to their last Chicago show at the Beat Kitchen. It was kinda sad, they were still so good. Lead singer and bassist extraordinaire, Caithlin De Marrais, has put out a few solo bits and pieces but nothing has captured my Cat Fancy until now. ‘Birds’ off her soon to be released album ‘Red Coats’ is not Rainer-esque, but is still absolutely brilliant. Listen and enjoy and go buy a Rainer Maria record while you are at it. Hit the jump for a stream — more

Greatest Hits: They Might Be Giants

on July 31, 2011

I recently won a pair of passes to see alt-rock champions They Might Be Giants perform at the Shedd Aquarium, and I thought I’d see if my friend Liz wanted to accompany me. Because she wasn’t super-familiar with the band, she asked me to provide her with a greatest hits mix as a primer. That’s kind of tricky when it comes to TMBG, a band with a lengthy, diverse career and no really satisfying official greatest hits packages: — more

New Tallest Man on Earth

Tallest Man on Earth

on July 11, 2011

Adult Swim’s Singles Program is cranking out some real gems. They previously showcased an unreleased Mastodon tune and accompanying insane Muppet destruction video. This week they have a new one from Swedish singer The Tallest Man on Earth. If you haven’t heard him before, you should be ashamed, and I think you’ll be quite surprised this guy isn’t American. He sounds eerily like early Dylan and sings with enough soul to fill ten people. Check out the new video after the jump. — more

New Video: Mastodon – Deathbound

on June 28, 2011

While we wait for the new Mastodon Album, “The Hunter,” to arrive this fall; we can watch the twisted new video they did for the Adult Swim Singles Program. Deathbound is not going to appear on the new album, rather it is a b-side from the “Crack the Skye” sessions. The video is what happens when you let a band like Mastodon play with muppets. Poor poor muppets. Hit the jump to stream the video. — more

Fiona Apple & Jon Brion cover Everyday

on June 22, 2011

‘Rave On’ the Buddy Holly tribute album is streaming over on Soundcloud. ‘Everyday’ is one of my all time favorite songs, in part due to the movie Stand By Me which had a big impact on me as a wee one. I was hoping Apple and Brion would do something a little more inventive, but their traditional take on this classic is very good, the harmonies are spot on. — more

Remembering Clarence Clemons

on June 19, 2011

“I’m all alone,” Bruce Springsteen howls on 1975′s “Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out.” “I’m on my own.” Bruce feels trapped; his music’s going nowhere, he’s got his “back to the wall.” But then: “the change was made uptown, and the Big Man joined the band.” All of a sudden, things are looking up; together, Bruce and the Big Man are going to “bust this city in half.”

“Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out” may not be literal truth… it might not even make much sense… but the crucial kernel of that story is this: Bruce Springsteen’s E-Street Band wasn’t whole until Big Man Clarence Clemons arrived. — more

It’s going to be a little bit before Dananananaykroyd’s new album is out but to tide you over, have a listen to Johnny Foreigner. Every bit as raucaus, mathy and loud, these English racketeers are phenom. Their latest LP ‘Grace and the Bigger Picture’ is a 5-star cartwheel through a noise factory. You won’t be disappointed unless you’re a fan of bad music and peace and quiet. Hit the jump to stream the jam ‘Choose Yr Side and Shut Up!’ — more

Video: Because the Origami

on May 10, 2011

A couple weeks ago we reviewed the all-star collaboration of Amanda Palmer, Ben Folds, Damian Kulash and Neil Gaiman, who gathered one night in Boston to record 8 songs in 8 hours after which culminated in the release of 8in8. The album produced a few stellar tracks and others that might not be perfect, but hell they were recorded in an hour, so leniency is due. After the album’s release they encouraged fan art and videos inspired by the songs. One of the best I have seen is embedded after the jump. — more
