Have You Heard: Jenny and Johnny – My Pet Snakes

I’ve been jamming the Jenny and Johnny album nonstop. My favorite so far is the embedded tune here: My Pet Snakes. Don’t know how long this link will last, but give it a listen. Its a minimal, 60s, harmony-laden jam that drifts effortlessly between luau and punk picnic.

Forgotten Gems: The Sound, “Possession”

on August 29, 2010

The Sound were a criminally overlooked English post-punk band from the early-80s… and forgotten gems probably don’t come more forgotten than this track, which to me is every bit as haunting as anything Joy Division ever put out. This track is taken from their second album, “From the Lion’s Mouth.” The Sound continued to put out albums until 1988, when a lack of commercial success split up the band, singer/guitar player Adrian Borland died in 1999 after committing suicide in the London Underground.

Sufjan takes a five year vacation and returns bearing many gifts. Last week, his new EP, All Delighted People dropped and this week comes news that a full album, The Age of Adz, will be here Oct. 12. Psyched. Stream a track from it above. Don’t expect anything similar to Illinoise, though, from asthmatic kitty’s description, we’re in for something more in tune with Enjoy Your Rabbit w/ vocals: — more

Have You Heard: Cherry Ghost

on August 25, 2010

England’s Cherry Ghost have been around since ’05 and have a couple LP’s under their belt. The newest, Beneath This Burning Shoreline, has me toe-tapping at work today. If you dig today’s baroque-pop and always wondered what it’d sound like combined with a laid back young Johnny Cash on vocals, have yourself a listen.

Sure, i missed out on presale tickets again!! Damn you internets! But, lo and behold there is new Sufjan material out today. Sure there has been Christmas EP comps and a pretty awesome BQE score, but the new EP All Delighted People feels like an actual follow up to 2005′s illinoise. At 8 songs and 60 minutes, this is more LP than EP. Semantics aside, get your ass over to Sufjan’s Band Camp and buy this for $5 and report back here with the verdict. Here is a quote from Asthmatic Kitty after the jump: — more

Have you Heard: Madee – Transference #2

on August 18, 2010

I can’t remember when or how I first heard Madee. But I knew they reminded me of Irish folkster Mundy and the chorus was catchy as hell. You can find the LP L’Antartica on iTunes. If you’re digging on this video; I recommend grabbing it.

Forgotten Gems: Hermann Loves Pauline

on August 16, 2010

The Super Furry Animals have been kicking it for quite a while. Coming up during the Britpop hey-day, they never quite fit in with that sound, despite being on Alan McGee’s Creation Records, instead they were always more experimental and just plain weird than most of the other UK bands of the time. That being said, they could still write incredibly catchy pop music as this song demonstrates…

Have You Heard: Rose Elinor Dougall

Rose Elinor Dougall got her start when she was 17 in the UK pop-group the Pipettes, a group I appreciated in theory but somehow never in practice. Her solo material that I’ve heard thus far, however, all sounds fantastic. And this song, “Find Me Out,” is the perfect remedy (or companion) to a rainy-day hangover. Her debut album hits stores in the UK on August 30th.

Have You Heard: Avi Buffalo – What’s In It For

Avi Buffalo are 4 Long Beach youngsters whose sound is way more refined and robust than I’d expect from a group barely out of high school. It’s Avi Zahner-Isenberg half cracking vocals that keeps me returning to these tunes over and over.

Have You Heard: Jens Lekman

Anything Jens Lekman does is enough to get me excited, and this new track, “The End of the World is Bigger Than Love,” is no exception. Don’t let the bleak song title fool you, this is another gorgeous ballad from the Swedish singer-songwriter, sung in his trademark croon. Let’s hope this means a new album isn’t too far behind.
